About Melanie

My name is Melanie and I am a married Puerto-Rican and Dominican Afro-Latina by way of the Bronx, New York. I am also a mom raising two beautiful babies on the West Coast. I have a passion for worship and have always served on a worship team. But my greatest passion is for communicating the Word. My late mentor always reminded me that it was more than a love, but that it was my calling.

I loved hearing it, learning it, talking with others about it, everything. But, I could not find a blog I could relate to, as a born and raised hip-hop-listening-city-loving-afro-latina who never associated Christianity with a problem free life. So I created what I was looking for in a blog.

I began thirtyone30.com. I uploaded a few blog posts and friends and family loved to read it. Fear of not being able to live up to my perfectionist expectations stopped me and while I took a break from uploading blog posts, my website was compromised and taken over by someone else. It was discouraging and took a long time to get back.

During that time, I felt a change, perhaps it was the fact that I was now married, or just had a baby, but thirtyone30 did not fit where I was in my journey anymore.

So I started over and began Urban Proverb, a name I originally chose for a handmade earring business I was also too afraid to continue (are you sensing a theme here?!). It became the perfect catalyst for a new start.

So here I am, here you are. On a blog written by a woman in her 30s writing everything her heart wants to communicate about the Word. I hope you find it entertaining, relatable and that it serves as an encouragement when needed.

My goal is to present the word in a way that is honest, raw, and most of all, relatable.
